Our founder Janine Curtis's passion for natural cosmetics started in 2014 after becoming aware of all the chemicals that were in our everyday cosmetics and the effects that these had on our bodies and the environment. She decided to ditch these products and switch to natural ones that didn't contain any harmful ingredients. After educating herself more about the ingredients she incidentally ended up learning more about the reality of the cosmetic world. She learnt about the reality of the working conditions and exploitation of people and animals that happens in order to produce certain ingredients and products, making her aware of the responsibility she had when selecting ingredients and suppliers. Along the way she also learnt how much damage the packaging of the cosmetic industry causes to our environment and our bodies, which ignited her passion for zero waste living, she started being more mindful about her plastic usage and what she could do to help the planet.
At the start of her cosmetic journey she learnt how to make basic cosmetic formulas by mixing a simple batch of ingredients together which slowly developed into more complex formulas. She would spend hours of research making sure she could find the best ingredients which were 100% natural, did not exploit workers or harm the environment but also provided the best function to the product. Throughout the years her passion and her knowledge grew and she learnt to create many different cosmetics including moisturisers, shampoo, conditioners and make up.
The belly balm was created for her pregnant sister. During the research stage of the formulation, she saw what was available on the market. The majority of products were of low quality cheap natural ingredients or ones that still contained petroleum products under the guise of being green or natural. These products were being sold at a premium but the quality of the ingredients inside didn't match the price tag and some weren't as natural as the consumer was led to believe. A lot were also produced in plastic which would ultimately end up in landfill for the price of vanity.
The skin is the body's biggest organ and can absorb up to 60% of what you put on it, because of this it's important to use high quality ingredients on your skin, especially when you're pregnant. She wanted to provide pregnant ladies with this higher quality option that seemed to be missing in the market. Handmade in small batches to ensure quality, with no fillers, no green washing and sourcing ingredients that have been carefully chosen for their unique benefit to the skin that are 100% natural and safe for you, your baby and the planet. Tapping into centuries-old knowledge passed down from women around the world from Africa to the Amazon that use local ingredients known for their amazing benefits to the skin. A brand that mindfully chooses suppliers and ingredients that help provide sustainable jobs and won't exploit workers or the environment. Only producing products in glass containers with a metal lid in order to prevent unnecessary landfill waste to look after the environment for your future children.
